It was a huge relief\, with safety\non everyone’s minds\, to know that the efforts were paying off\,” says Carbon Leaf\nfrontman Barry Privett.\n“The systems worked very well we were able to connect through live music once\nagain. When we got home in December\, we went right to work writing and recording.\nWe wanted this album to have a little bit more fun than our 2021 release\, Gathering\n2: The Hunting Ground. This new album will be expanding that neighborhood\, musing\non space and time\, and the brief moment we get to experience it as Earthlings\, if you\nwill.”\nThe ongoing Gathering series the band has been working on over the last few years is\nall about building community.\n“It’s a call to look inwards and find what matters\, an invitation to reach out and\nembrace the gifts of human connection.” Privett says.\nThat’s no mean feat given the deep divisions that have defined much of the past few\nyears of American life\, but Carbon Leaf has always punched above their weight\,\ndefying the odds at every turn and redefining what’s possible for a modern indie band\nin the process. The group’s extraordinary new mini-album\, Gathering 2: The Hunting\nGround\, is no exception. Recorded at the band’s own studio in Richmond\, VA\, the\ncollection marks the second installment of the group’s four-part Gathering series\,\nwhich finds the long-running quintet stripping their sound back to its organic\, acoustic\ncore as they reckon with our ever-conflicting desires for unity and independence. The\nsongs here are gutsy and probing\, grappling with grief\, loss\, anger\, and pain\, and the\narrangements are aggressive and insistent to match\, fueled by layers of relentlessly\nstrummed guitars\, rolling banjo\, and lush fiddle. The result is a moving\, cathartic\ncollection that’s unafraid to confront darkness and doubt head on\, a poignant\,\nrevelatory record all about the power of self-reflection and the ties that bind.\n“One of the big questions we found ourselves grappling with as a band was\, ‘How do\nyou actually make any kind of a difference in society today?’” says Privett. “And I\ndon’t think you can do that without first looking inwards—to yourself\, your family\,\nyour friends—and figuring out what your values truly are.”\nAnyone who’s caught a Carbon Leaf show over the past three decades probably has a\npretty good idea just what those values are: brotherhood\, commitment\, empathy\,\nintegrity\, self-reliance. Founded at Randolph-Macon College in 1992\, the group\nevolved from a houseparty cover band into something far more profound after\ngraduation\, when they moved to Richmond and made the shift to original music. The\nband’s first three albums helped build a devoted cult following\, but it was 2001’s Echo\nEcho that truly brought Carbon Leaf to national attention\, with lead single “The\nBoxer” earning the group a performance slot in front of millions of viewers at the\nAmerican Music Awards. After nearly ten years of self-releasing and grinding it out on\nthe road (both as headliners and as guests appearing on bills alongside the likes of\nDave Matthews Band\, O.A.R.\, Jason Mraz\, Blues Traveler\, and Guster\, among others)\,\nthe band signed with Vanguard Records in 2004 for their critical and commercial breakthrough\, Indian Summer\, which yielded a Top 5 hit at AAA radio and garnered\nrave reviews everywhere from The Washington Post to WXPN. While the band would go\non to release two more similarly well-received albums with Vanguard\, it soon became\nobvious to everyone that independence wasn’t simply an ideal for Carbon Leaf\, but\nrather an integral part of their DNA\, and so in 2010\, the band parted ways with the\nlabel in order to return to their DIY roots and take complete and total control of their\ncareer. Acting as their own label\, distributor\, and manager\, the band cut new versions\nof all three Vanguard albums in order to regain the rights to the recordings\, launched\ntheir own festival\, and began releasing a successful series of direct-to-fan concert\nfilms\, livestreams\, and studio records leading up to the first installment of the\nGathering series in 2018.\n“The initial idea for these Gathering albums was to get a bunch of our musical friends\ntogether in the studio for a weekend and make something really communal and\ncollaborative\,” explains Privett. “We had some of our pals from We Banjo 3 join in on\nVolume 1\, but for the second installment we decided to strike out on our own because\nthe songs just felt more personal and introspective.”\nThough Carbon Leaf had traditionally embraced a wall of sound approach in the\nstudio\, this time around they went back to the basics\, focusing on raw\, acoustic\narrangements that placed the storytelling front and center. With guitarist Terry Clark\nhandling engineering duties\, the band—Privett\, Clark\, stringed instrument wizard\nCarter Gravatt\, bassist Jon Markel\, and drummer Jesse Humphrey—captured\nperformances on and off over the course of roughly six months\, experimenting with a\nwide variety of instruments and mic placements to generate a series of immersive\,\ntransportive sonic landscapes.\n“Space was a big thing for us when we were making these recordings\,” says Clark.\n“Moving the microphones further away so we could really capture the room and the air\nhelped add lot of the character and dimension these songs needed.”\nWhile some of the tracks here began life as instrumental demos from Gravatt\, others\nfirst took shape as a capella lyrical or melodic ideas from Privett. Regardless of where\neach tune began\, though\, the finished product would inevitably wind up bearing the\nunmistakable fingerprints of all five bandmates\, whose infectious chemistry\nconsistently yields more than the sum of its parts.\n“We like to take a world-building approach in the studio\,” says Privett. “We’ll stack\nthings up and layer them on top of each other until we’ve got something that sounds\nway beyond just five guys in a room together.”\nThat alchemy is obvious from the outset on The Hunting Ground\, which opens with the\nchurning “Everything’s Alright Mama.” Mixing gritty Appalachian folk with lilting Celtic\ninfluences\, the track begins with both feet on the ground and builds into a soaring\nwork of bittersweet beauty\, balancing the mundane and the magical in equal measure\nas it reaches out into the void for connection. Like much of the album\, it’s a bright\,\nuptempo tune\, but dig beneath the surface and you’ll find an underlying sense of\nsadness that permeates the often-impressionistic lyrics. The driving “Her Father’s\nPride\,” for instance\, grapples with division on both a personal and a communal scale\,\nwhile the rollicking “Smokey Joe Of The Poconos” explores what happens to those left behind in the name of progress\, and the mesmerizing “Pale Blue Dot” zooms out to\ncontemplate our place and our purpose in the greater scheme of the universe. It’s\nperhaps the muscular title track\, though\, that best encapsulates the sense of\nquestioning and longing that defines the collection\, with Privett singing\, “Is this all we\nhave\, the natural world? Is anyone around?”\n“The idea of the hunting ground is that it’s this place where you’re searching for\nsomething out in the great wild unknown\,” says Privett. ”How do you process grief?\nHow do you fix your soul in the face of losing someone you care about? How do you\ncarry on when life doesn’t go the way you’d planned?”\nIn the end\, of course\, there are no easy answers to these questions\, and that’s\nprecisely the point. The hunt is an endless one\, but it doesn’t need to be lonely.\nWe’re all in the search together\, and after more than a year of distance and isolation\,\nit’s hard to think of anything we need more than a good old fashioned gathering. \nSPACE

SUMMARY:Joe Pug with special guests Joey Harkum
DESCRIPTION:Sun Scape Live presents Joe Pug at State Fare on Friday June 24th.  Special guests Joey Harkum.  Also just announced! John Bolten (of Geraldine) will also be performing from 6:15-7:15pm.  Joey Harkum 8:00-9:00pm followed by Joe Pug 9:30-11:00pm. \nTickets are $20 and go on sale Thursday\, May 5th at 9:00am. Show is from 6pm – 11:00.  All ages event. \nBIOGRAPHY \nWhat began as a process of collecting archived session files for a B-sides album morphed into an obsessive remix. Finally\, it became a full-on album process with entirely new songs. “The Diving Sun” brings together lost gems from Joe Pug’s various studio sessions with producers Duane Lundy (Jim James\, Ben Sollee) and Kenneth Pattengale (The Milk Carton Kids\, Joy Williams)\, along with new songs recorded in quarantine. The album is slated for release on March 19th\, 2021 via Nation of Heat Records.\n“Once I had chosen the archived songs\, I realized that there was a narrative running through all of them\,” says Pug. “ To complete that narrative\, I had to write and record some new songs. But then once I had those new songs recorded\, I had to improve the old ones. It was kind of like when you clean one room of your house and the only result is that it makes your other rooms look messier.”\n“The Diving Sun” begins with a summer romance in the romping “Crescent Bridge” and continues with a bitter separation in the haunting “Wild Kind of Longing”. Finally\, the album reconciles on a buoyant note of hope on “Ten Miles of Mercy” with the triumphant mellotron arrangement of Pat Sansone (Wilco\, The Autumn Defense). Along the way\, there’s a wry look at heartbreak with “None the Wiser” which lopes along with a beat courtesy of renowned session drummer JT Bates (Bon Iver\, Taylor Swift\, Bonny Light Horseman). Of course\, no album about star-crossed lovers would be complete without a John-Cusack-Boombox-On-The-Lawn ballad like “Deep End” which features the wiley accordion of Philip Krohnengold (Sara Bareilles\, Matt Berninger).\nJoe Pug is a singer-songwriter noted for his lyrical acumen and plaintive harmonica style. After dropping out of college in his early twenties\, he moved to Chicago where he worked as a carpenter before breaking into the city’s music scene. Since 2008\, he has released a string of critically-acclaimed albums and toured heavily in the U.S. and abroad. Paste Magazine has written of his music\, “Unless your surname is Dylan\, Waits\, Ritter\, or Prine\, you could face-palm yourself to death trying to pen songs half as inspired.”\nHe has toured with Steve Earle\, Levon Helm\, and Sturgill Simpson. In 2015\, Brandon Flowers of The Killers personally tapped Joe to open a European tour after hearing his song “If Still It Can’t Be Found.” He has appeared at Lollapalooza\, Bonnarroo\, and The Newport Folk Festival.\nAdditionally\, he is the creator and host of The Working Songwriter podcast\, an interview show that has become a premier destination for songwriters to discuss their craft. Past guests have included Lucinda Williams\, Ian Mackaye of Fugazi\, Josh Ritter\, Kathleen Edwards\, and many more. \nFlyer design by Ian Herrick.  Visit http://www.ianherrickartist.com/
